iPhone XS/XR/7 plus users are finding 'set automatically' grayed out and facing an issue that they are unable to change date time setting. 'Set Automatically' feature in iPhone allows your iPhone to choose your time zone according to your location. But there is a scenario where iPhone users do not wish to update time zone as per location or zone. To do this, you will have to go to Settings-> General->Date and Time -> turn off 'set automatically,' but iPhone users are unable to turn it off as the 'set automatically' is grayed out and disabled to make any changes to it.

The issue, "Set Automatically" grayed out, is seen across all iPhone XS Max/XR/8/7 plus/iPad pro in iOS 12.2, latest iOS version. So the issue is not specific to hardware and surely a software glitch/restriction settings in iOS 12.2

How to fix iPhone XS/XR/8/7 'Set Automatically option grayed out' in iOS 12/12.1 and iOS 12.2

Fix 1: Remove Screen Time passcode

Screen Time featured is addes in iOS 12 and it lets you set time limit on using an app. This is really a great feature in iPhone specially in Family sharing iPhone users. Being a parent you will always have access to amount of time your child can access apps like Facebook, Instagram etc.

But if your child has access to change Date & Time , they can be clever in using apps out of time limit by altering the Time of clock and fool you.

So to enable grayed out 'Set Automatially' Date & Time, please disable Screen Time Passcode : Go to Settings > Screen Time >scroll down & Tap on Turn off Screen Time Passcode > Enter screen Time passcode

Check Settings > General > Date & Time and see if you can now toggle Set Automatically. Now you will see that "Set Automatically": is Enabled in Date Time settings.

Fix 2: Turn off location services for Date Time settings

Since iPhone uses its location to find the right time zone for you. Please turn off location access to the Date and Time and see if this change allows to modify Date Time – 'set automatically' field.

To turn off the automatic time zone locations in iOS: Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services->Scroll to System Services ->Turn off the Setting Time Zone button.

Fix 3: Check with network carrier

Some carriers do not allow you to turn off automatic setting of date/time. You should probably check with network service provider for any such restrictions.

Fix 4: Hard reset iPhone

Restarting the iPhone will generally fix software glitch and hard reset will boot your iPhone again. To hard reset the iPhone

-Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
